Is a vegetarian diet more expensive

Is a food plant diet really more expensive?

Submitted by our nutritionist Inês Panão

It can be, but not necessarily, it depends on your shopping choices.

If we think of plant-based food based on more processed products, it will probably be less friendly to our budget. But if it is supported by simple foods, such as fruits, vegetables, and legumes, I bet it will be wallet friendly.

So what products make plant-based food more expensive?

Mainly ready-to-eat foods such as sausages, hamburgers, cheese, ice cream and some bars.

What are the essential foods and into account?

  • Vegetables

  • Fruit

  • Legumes

  • Whole grains

  • Dried fruits and seeds

Money saving tips:

  • Choose seasonal vegetables and fruits.

  • Buy from local markets and producers instead of supermarkets.

  • Compare the price of fresh and frozen vegetables.

  • Always compare prices per kg and not per package.

  • Dried legumes instead of canned ones.

  • Choose to buy bulk (a vulso?)

  • Moderate the purchase of tofu, tempeh and seitan and choose more legumes as a source of vegetable protein.

  • Make vegetable milk at home.

  • Bet on making bread instead of buying it. And avoid buying packaged bread.

  • Cook as much as possible at home to avoid eating out or ordering.

  • Define a weekly menu for meals at home and the groceries list. Organization is the secret to eat healthily and affordably.

  • Before defining the shopping, check what you already have at home.

  • Analyze supermarket leaflets with promotions.

  • Take advantage of cost-effective packaging promotions.
